CARTER PLANTATION TRIPLES FUNDRAISING EFFORTS
The fundraising efforts for the Folds of Honor Foundation at Carter Plantation more than tripled the donations from 2009, according to Director of Golf, Bill Caldwell. “We have over two hundred participants from the local community to thank, in addition to congratulating the winner of the Patriot Golf Day putting contest, Dr. Ron Gilbert”. “Without everyone’s support the event would have been a failure”. Dr. Gilbert received a signed print by former PGA Champion, David Toms. A photo of the signature golf hole, #14, that Mr. Toms designed himself.
Caldwell also thanked the Ponchatoula High School ROTC Honor Guard, who opened the ceremonies by presenting the colors.

Patriot Golf Day is held at thousands of participating golf courses each fall to raise money for the Folds of Honor Foundation which was founded in 2007 by Major Dan Rooney. Major Rooney is an F-16 fighter Pilot, and a PGA Professional. A decorated military pilot in the Oklahoma Air National Guard, Major Rooney has served three combat tours in Iraq. It was after his second tour, while a passenger on a commercial flight, that Major Rooney witnessed an event that profoundly changed his life. As the plane landed, the pilot announced, “Ladies and gentleman, we have an American hero on board, Corporal Brock Bucklin, and his twin brother, Corporal Brad Bucklin, is accompanying him home from Iraq. As a sign of respect, please remain seated while Corporal Bucklin’s family receives him in his final homecoming.” Major Rooney watched through the window of the plane as the flag-draped casket was lowered. He saw a family waiting for Brock, and a little four-year old boy waiting for his father. This tragic homecoming inspired Major Rooney to create the Folds of Honor Foundation. Since its creation since 2007, Patriot Golf Day and its events supported by the PGA of America and the United States Golf Association have raised more than $5.3 million and the Folds of Honor has awarded 1,163 scholarships.
